Religious Education (RE)

Intent of Religious Education

At Biggin Hill Primary School, we follow the Kapow Primary Religion and Worldviews (R&W) scheme of work to provide a high-quality and engaging RE curriculum. Our aim is to help children become curious, reflective and open-minded learners. We encourage pupils to ask meaningful questions, explore a range of religions and worldviews, and think carefully about their own beliefs and values as well as those of others.

Through this curriculum, children develop an understanding of how religion and worldviews influence individuals, communities and cultures, both in the past and in the present day. We aim to nurture respectful, thoughtful young people who value diversity and feel confident engaging with different perspectives in modern Britain and the wider world.

Implementation

The scheme follows a structured, spiral approach, meaning that key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed year by year from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 2. This ensures that learning builds progressively and deepens over time.

Carefully sequenced lessons, ensures that teaching is consistent, engaging and inclusive across the school. Lessons encourage discussion, reflection and enquiry, allowing all pupils to participate fully and develop confidence in expressing their ideas.

The progression of learning is organised into three main areas:

  • Substantive knowledge – Children learn about a range of organised religions and worldviews. They explore important beliefs, practices and traditions, and identify similarities and differences between them.

  • Personal knowledge – Children reflect on their own ideas, values and beliefs, considering questions about meaning, identity and purpose in an age-appropriate way.

  • Disciplinary knowledge – Children develop the skills needed to study religion and worldviews. They explore religious stories and texts, examine how beliefs are lived out in everyday life, and practise questioning, interpreting and discussing thoughtfully.

This clear structure ensures that children gain both knowledge and the skills to think critically and respectfully about different viewpoints.

Religious Education Covid Recovery at Biggin Hill Primary

Pupils at Biggin Hill Primary develop a secure understanding of a range of religions and worldviews. They grow in confidence when discussing important and sometimes complex questions, and they learn to listen carefully and respectfully to others.

By the time they leave our school, our pupils are reflective, informed and respectful individuals. They are well prepared to thrive in a diverse society, equipped with the curiosity, empathy and understanding needed to contribute positively to their communities.
